For many first-time visitors, Indonesia can feel like a big unknown. Headlines tend to focus on busy cities, traffic chaos, or cultural differences, and it’s normal to arrive with a few concerns in the back of your mind.
But then there’s Manado — and it quietly surprises almost everyone.
Located in North Sulawesi, Manado consistently ranks among Indonesia’s safest, calmest, and most welcoming cities for international travelers. For guests staying at our resorts, safety isn’t something you actively think about — it’s simply part of everyday life.
Let’s start by addressing the most common worries people have before visiting Indonesia, and why they don’t really apply here.
In Manado, yes — very much so.
Unlike larger Indonesian cities, Manado has some of the lowest levels of street crime, especially violent crime. Walking along the boulevard, visiting a café, or heading to a restaurant in the evening feels relaxed and normal. Locals are friendly, curious, and respectful, and tourists are treated as guests rather than targets.
Petty theft exists everywhere in the world, but in Manado it’s extremely rare and avoidable with basic common sense — quite a difference compared to many western cities!
Honestly, Manado moves at a different pace.
Yes there’s traffic, but nothing like Jakarta or Bali. There are markets, but they’re lively rather than feeling “pushy”. People don’t pressure you. For many travelers, Manado feels refreshingly calm compared to more touristic parts of Indonesia.

North Sulawesi is predominantly Christian, which already surprises many visitors. But more importantly, Manado is known throughout Indonesia for its tolerance and harmony.
Different religious groups live in a comparatively peaceful coexistence, and foreigners are warmly welcomed. Locals are noticeably proud of their reputation as friendly and open-minded. It shows in daily interactions. When I talk to people, I often hear them say Manado aman – “Manado is safe”, giving me the sense that people are acutely aware of Manado’s unique society within Indonesia’s urban life.

Manado has fairly good hospitals, clinics, and pharmacies, modern supermarkets, reliable mobile networks, and stable electricity compared to many remote destinations. For travelers, this adds an extra layer of comfort and peace of mind.

Safety in Manado isn’t just about statistics — it’s about how a day feels. Here’s what a normal day looks like for most Thalassa guests.
You wake up to tropical sounds — birds, not traffic. Breakfast is relaxed, with staff greeting you by name. There’s no sense of hurry or pressure.
Whether you’re diving, snorkeling, or simply enjoying a free day, everything runs smoothly. Transport arrives on time. Equipment is handled professionally. You never feel unsure about where you’re going or what’s happening next.
Some guests head into Manado city, others stay near the resort. You might:
There’s no need to constantly clutch your bag or look over your shoulder. Locals smile, say hello, and often ask where you’re from — not to sell you something, but out of genuine curiosity. This is such a breath of fresh air compared to visiting Bali, Bangkok or other busy tourist destinations!
Traffic is manageable. Drivers are used to foreigners. Transfers feel organized rather than chaotic. Even when plans change slightly (as they sometimes do in Indonesia), it’s handled calmly and transparently.
This is something many of our guests comment on: nothing feels stressful.
Although we won’t let you go hungry at our resorts with our full board accommodation, dinner in Manado city is definitely a highlight. Restaurants are friendly, informal, and welcoming. Whether you’re eating seafood by the sea or trying local Minahasan dishes, evenings feel social rather than hectic.
Walking back after dinner is normal. Streets are lit, people are out with families, and there’s a strong sense of community. Manado feels like a city that looks after itself — and its visitors.
Several factors contribute to Manado’s reputation as one of Indonesia’s safest cities:
For travelers, this creates something rare: a destination that feels exotic and tropical, yet emotionally comfortable from the moment you arrive.
This already happens the minute you leave the airport arrivals: as usual a small group of taxi drivers and (usually female) sales reps will ask you if you need transportation. A friendly “no thank you” is already enough. Nobody is being pushy.
But I can make this even better…
After declining the offer, you can just ask “Thalassa?” and people will immediately point you to our driver that is waiting to pick you up!
Now where else in the world do you find such friendliness?

Manado is particularly well-suited for:
You don’t need to “figure Indonesia out” here. The city meets you halfway, gently introducing you to the culture without overwhelming you.

If exploring this characterful city alone seems a little bit overwhelming, we offer a super informative city walk with a lot of culture and history that makes many guests go “I never knew that!”. Read our article covering it. You can easily arrange it at our Manado location. It’s a lot of fun!
The best kind of safety is the kind you stop noticing.
In Manado, days pass without tension, stress, or worry. You focus on diving, nature, food, conversations, and slowing down — exactly what a holiday should be about.
For Thalassa guests, Manado isn’t just a gateway to world-class diving. It’s a place where you can truly relax, knowing you’re in one of Indonesia’s safest and most welcoming corners.
And for many visitors, that’s what makes our guests leave as friends!
