Eighteen Resorts, One Cause

As co-operating dive resorts, we can get a lot done: from putting an end to destructive fishing methods to banning the use of anchors on the reefs. We intend to be the binding factor between resorts that want to earn a living with
diving, and the local community that uses the Bunaken Marine Park for its own livelihood…

Achievements

With the number of protection missions we accomplished over the years, the Bunaken National Marine Park has become a much more “mature” diving destination. No dive guides feeding animals, no activities that are damaging to the coral, and so on. For a more in-depth look at our activities, please take a look at our blog.

No anchoring

Invoked a strict ban on all anchoring within the park by NSWA members’ boats. Park rangers patrol the area to enforce this policy.

Mooring buoys

Installed a series of mooring buoys at three islands and one mainland site in the park. Local villagers were involved in the buoys’ design and placement.

Entrance fee

All divers that stay with one of our resorts are to pay an entrance fee to the park of IDR 150,000, valid during their entire stay.

Encouraging education

Our scholarship programs and beach cleanups help increase ecological awareness amongst local communities.

Local involvement

All NSWA resorts are committed to hire more local villagers as much as possible — from dive guides to resort staff.

Sensible tourism

We actively fight against unregulated tourist practices in the park, preserving the fragile ecosystem for years to come.
