Coelacanth spotted!

The legendary “living fossil” was first discovered off the Southern African coast around 100 years ago. Back in 1997 marine biologist Mark Erdmann discovered the coelacanth in Manado, and one year later it was finally discovered that there is an Asian species of this legendary fish as well.

Today, a specimen ended up in a fisherman’s net on the island of Tagulandang, some 100 kilometers north of Manado (and still part of North Sulawesi). This is an extremely rare find!

The fisherman in question released it back into the ocean! What an incredible encounter!
